Crowd of 1000 needed, as well as 500 singers for 4 part harmonies.

Performers: minimum of 1 rehearsal, Palm Sunday afternoon, and live on Good Friday morning. More if anyone wishes to move.

The next meeting of the Preston Environmental Forum will be on Thursday 16^th of Feb at 7:30.

The meeting will be held at St Michael's Church in Ashton (at the junction of Tulketh Road and Egerton Road, PR2 1 AJ). Entrance to the room is gained easily via Egerton Road. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

This site is the home of the Feed and Weed project (and community food growing project) and a monthly Farmers Market.

WORKING SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES EVERY HOUSE SHOULD HAVE ONE

THOUGH the number of house fires and injuries in Lancashire are at their lowest levels, in the last month, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service has rescued 23 people from house fires. Sadly six people have lost their lives, including four children.

Working smoke alarms and a little basic fire awareness can make the difference between life and death in the event of a fire in the home. They give a vital early warning and extra time to escape.

You can get a FREE smoke alarm and fire safety advice from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service at ANY fire station in Lancashire on Saturday 21^st January between 11am and 5pm just call in.

Alternatively fire service staff will also be out and about at shopping centres, football grounds and other community venues during this time. Visit our website www.lancsfirerescue.org.uk to find out where they will be. People can also get a smoke alarm from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service by ringing 0800 169 1125 to book a Home Fire Safety Check.

Peter Holland, Lancashire's Chief Fire Officer said: "So many deaths and injuries from house fires can be prevented by taking a few simple steps such as taking care when cooking, putting out cigarettes and not leaving electrical appliances switched on. But if a fire does happen, a working smoke detector will help to save your life by giving you an early warning and more time to get out. If you haven't got a smoke alarm come to your fire station this Saturday to get one, or phone us to arrange a home fire safety check.

"If you have a smoke alarm go and check it now and check it every week after this. Never, ever remove the batteries or take the smoke alarm down from the ceiling. Clean your smoke alarm with a vacuum cleaner attachment twice a year perhaps when the clocks change. These simple actions could mean the difference between life and death.

Tackling Poverty Conference – 18 April, Leeds
Tackling Poverty 2012 is Church Urban Fund's annual national conference for community activists, youth workers, clergy and volunteers tackling poverty in their communities. Join others in exploring issues that affect social action. There will be speakers in the morning, including Most Revd and Rt Hon Dr John Sentamu the Archbishop of York, John Bell from the Iona Community and Helen Gatenby from M13 Youth Project, and a choice of interactive workshops. The cost of the day is £10 (including lunch), and you can book online.

Share your experiences of supporting young, unemployed people
Is your Church or project doing innovative things to tackle youth unemployment? If so, please let us know by emailing daniel.chapman@cuf.org.uk. Following nationwide research, Church Urban Fund is planning to host a conference in conjunction with Frontier Youth Trust, which will bring together people who are helping, or who want to help young unemployed people in their local areas. We are looking for community activists who are willing to share what they have learned.

Managing a community building - 24 January, Manchester
This course provides a whistlestop introduction covering the basics you need to ensure effective management of a community building. Self-assessment tools and action planning to implement change are key throughout so you will take away practical ways to improve your building's success. Tickets cost £45.

Community development – 28 February, Chatham
In these challenging times, community project staff and volunteers are finding that they are getting involved in community development for the first time. When interacting with groups in the community it is essential to understand the mechanisms behind community development, such as working with various groups - skills you and your project will gain through this course. Tickets cost between £35-50.

Keeping the Faith: retaining Christian distinctiveness in your community project
Christian projects can offer a distinctive response to tackling poverty in local communities. With funding and changing personnel, this distinctiveness can come under pressure. Keeping the Faith is a resource to help projects reflect on these issues. It is divided into three sections: theological reflections on the importance of distinctly Christian community work; principles and pressures facing community projects; practical issues around being distinctly Christian - with case studies, scenarios and a checklist to aid discussion and reflection within your church/project.

Working effectively with local media
Churches and local projects looking to engage more fully with their communities have potentially much to gain from the media that cover the areas where they work. There are simple ways to greatly increase your chances of getting it right when working with local media outlets, even if you are starting from scratch. This guide shows you how.

Time Banking UK guide
Time Banking UK is the national umbrella charity linking and supporting time banks across the country by providing inspiration, guidance and practical help. Time banks link people locally to share their time and skills. Everyone's time is equal: one hour of your time earns you one time credit to spend when you need. If you are thinking of starting a Time Bank in your area, this guide may be a good place to start.

IT4Communities
IT4Communities introduces charities, voluntary organisations and community groups needing help with IT-related projects to volunteer IT professionals. Its volunteers give £750,000 of support to UK charities every year, helping organisations to run efficiently, make good use of new technologies and free up staff time to deliver vital services to the communities across the UK.

Funding

The Pilgrim Trust
This programme aims to break cycles of dependency and to help develop a sense of social inclusion in disadvantaged or marginalised groups within the UK. It awards grants in two main areas: 1) projects that support people who misuse drugs and alcohol, and 2) projects in prisons and projects that provide alternatives to custody.

Prince's Trust
Grants of up to £3000 to design and set up a youth-led community project that will benefit the local community and help young people to develop new skills for the future.

The Lankelly Chase Foundation
This foundation concentrates upon smaller charities, many of whom will have only a local or regional remit. It awards small to medium grants to charities working in the following areas: breaking cycles of abuse, those with mental health issues, destitute asylum seekers, community development, church renovation for community renewal.

Good practice

Supporting young men and fathers: tackling poverty casestudy
Would you like to support young men and fathers in your area? This casestudy shares learning from a mentoring charity called SixtyEightFive, a CUF partner project. It has great ideas about how to come alongside men and boys facing difficult situations. This is the first of a series of casestudy resources for Christians wanting ideas about how to tackle different aspects of poverty in their areas.

Power, poverty and the Church: galvanising the Church to tackle poverty in this country
How can we build a movement of Christians committed to tackling poverty in this country? And how can we help churches to engage more effectively with those in power? Organised jointly by Church Urban Fund, Church Action on Poverty and St John's Waterloo, this workshop brought together church leaders, activists and anti-poverty charities from across denominations to begin to address these questions. To stimulate debate, we asked three prominent Christian social thinkers to share their views and experiences. This report summarises the main findings.

This booklet provides inspiration and guidance for your community project, gathered from 15 years of collected wisdom from Tearfund's UK partners operating grassroots Christian community organisations and church community projects.

Poverty and policy

Voluntary sector job losses. "It feels almost misleading to tell others to come and join us". In 2011, the voluntary sector shed 70,000 jobs – with women an estimated 56,000 of these. The voluntary work force is decreasing ahead of public and private sectors. London saw 41,000 leave the voluntary sector with the North East having 18,000 fewer staff than a year ago. For more details read reports from ncvo and The Guardian.

The Welfare Reform Bill. This could have huge implications for people and communities, and those tackling poverty. The Guardian provides a helpful guide to navigating this important bill. There are multiple campaigns to change aspects of the bill – including a campaign by Shelter for people who lose their job and need temporary financial support.

Child poverty. Statistics reveal concentrated pockets of child poverty in the UK. The percentage of children in families on out of work benefits in 60% in Grangetown ward (Middlesbrough), 52% in Nechells ward (Birmingham), and surprisingly, 43% in Islington (London). The Challenge Network is a registered charity, our core aim is to bring together young people from diverse backgrounds and inspire them to come together and serve their communities. This is the second year that we shall be running in Preston and our summer program will see us work with up to 240 young people from your local area. 2012 is set to be a fantastic year for Preston, here at The Challenge we want to build upon that and get involved with some of the great community partners that operate within the area.

We are looking for local organisations that matter to the local community to be involved in our program this summer. There are a variety of different ways you can be involved such as:

Fundraising partner- we are looking for organisations that have a need for fundraising and also a small project that 12 young people can complete in a day with financial assistance up to the value of £150 for materials etc from us. Anything from weeding a community garden, painting a meeting room to organising a store cupboard.....the list is endless!
Community interaction partner- Do you have a group of service users or members that would like to learn a new skill taught to them by young people? This element of the program breaks down the barriers to interaction and encourages community cohesion, beneficial and fun for all involved
Volunteering- Do you need an extra pair or pair's of hands to volunteer? If so we have lot's of young people in your local area who want to volunteer and get involved.

Lancashire Partnership Against Crime (LANPAC) and The Children's Society are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity, which has arisen through funding from Comic Relief. We want to employ an Intensive Support Worker for boys and young men who are victims of sexual exploitation and those who have a high incidence of missing from home/care.

You'll work across Lancashire to raise awareness linking with Lancashire Constabulary's multi-agency teams working with victims of sexual exploitation and missing children/young people.

We're looking to recruit an experienced practitioner employed by LANPAC but joining the team of The Children's Society Street Safe Project, focusing on specific work across Lancashire to support boys and young men at risk of sexual exploitation and those missing from home/care.

Your role will be to support boys and young men through appropriate interventions, ensuring 1:1 work is undertaken using recognised programmes and co-working with colleagues from the police, children's services and health to undertake assessments and personalised planning that secure the best outcomes for children and young people.

With other team members, you'll support the development of the project and liaise with staff from other agencies to promote the services offered. You'll work across Lancashire to raise awareness regarding the issues affecting this vulnerable group of children.

You'll have a proven record of working in a similar setting and undertaking direct 1:1 work with children and young people who have been at risk. You'll also have significant experience of assessing need, and planning interventions that reduce risk and co-working with colleagues from statutory and voluntary agencies. An in-depth knowledge and understanding of working with victims of sexual exploitation and those missing from home/care is essential.

Hours of work will be 37 per week. Flexible working is required (evenings and weekends) but time in lieu is given.

Befriending Service Vision Night - Monday 6th Feb

Loneliness and isolation is an increasing problem across Preston and South Ribble.

Come and find out how could make a difference to folk in your community.

As one of the follow ons from the Listening Skills Training Day in November the vision night will be an informal discussion to look at what we mean by Befriending, what you would like to see included in a service and what a training course, might include.

Fusion is looking to launch a Befriending Service in the spring and will be recruiting a team of volunteers who can give an hour

or two a week. Full training and supervision will be provided. However, other organisations and schemes in the church and community also need people to become befrienders, so the Befriending Training is open to anyone - you don't don't need to become a volunteer to attend. The vision night will also be helpful to church leaders and those involved in Christian / caring organisations that could benefit from or develop befriending services in the future.

13% INCREASE IN NUMBER OF HOMELESS HOUSEHOLDS

According to DCLG figures published last Thursday, the number of households accepted as homeless by councils in England has increased by 13%, compared to the same period in 2010.

Particularly alarming is the 35% increase in the number of people becoming homeless because of an end to their short hold tenancy.

Responding to the figures, Jacqui McCluskey, Homeless Link's Director of Policy, said: "We are concerned that this trend will accelerate as the Government's changes to housing benefit bite."

The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal 2011

The Salvation Army is again organising the provision of Christmas parcels for families, and individuals in need. I am very grateful to all churches and agencies who donate goods to us which enable us to continue this service.

The referral form which can be downloaded from http://sapreston.synthasite.com/ specifies the information required; the information is duplicated on one page to help identify family parcels when they are packed.

Unfortunately we anticipate an even higher demand for practical help this year, so once again I am sorry to say we are having to limit referrals to a choice of either toys OR food. If possible could donated gifts be delivered during the weeks before 19^th December; this will be of great help the agencies with their deliveries.

Referrals can be accepted on paper by post by hand, or by email.

Referring agencies/key-workers will need to contact us to arrange the collection and delivery of their own parcels, or arrange for clients to come and collect them from our centre on Harrington Street which is open most weekdays between 9.30am and 4pm.

If neither of those options is available to a family in need we will endeavor to deliver in the Preston area.

We expect collections to begin from Monday 12^th December; agencies should contact our office to confirm a collection day. The final deadline for this will be 3pm on Thursday 22nd December.

Background

St Matthews Mission in Acregate Lane is a late Victorian building, largely unimproved and home to a small elderly congregation but growing range of community and outreach activities. The area served is extremely deprived, and ethnically diverse. Unemployment and long term worklessness is higher than the local and regional averages. The immediate project arises out of conversations with various stakeholders, mainly within the Preston Christian Action Network, and the Friends of St Matthews and Fishwick community association, (a group which has emerged following the end of the council led neighbourhood renewal programme in the area.)

We have identified unemployment and youth issues as significant needs which the church is well placed to address. Working with Job Centre + , and other local churches and community groups who have experience in the field we are on the verge of establishing a Work Club offering support to local unemployed people.

The aim of the club is to provide weekly informal sessions for unemployed people in the inner Eastern part of Preston (Mainly St Matthews and Fishwick Wards). We recognize that there are significant issues with long term worklessness, as well as issues with youth (NEETS), women lacking confidence and skills who wish to break into or return to the labour market, and people who have been made redundant as a result of recent public sector and private sector cutbacks.

The sessions will aim to;

Be informal, offering non judgemental, non coercive support to unemployed people attending voluntarily,
Seek to build confidence and motivation developing life-skills which will increase employability.
Offer mutual support and encouragement through developing the club as a groups where hopes, success and disappointments can be shared
Provide access to IT and internet offering help with job search, application processes, CVs, interview skills, pathways to training etc.

Subject to a successful pilot period beginning mid January for a month.. we anticipate the club will run weekly throughout 2012.

ESF Community Learning Grants in the North West

Does your group want to help people overcome barriers and gain the skills and confidence to get back into work?

Nearly £2m is available to be given out over the next two years in the North West as ESF Community Learning Grants.

These are grants up to a maximum of £12,000 available to support some of the hardest to reach communities and individuals, to help people access further learning or training that could lead to employment.

The funding can be applied for by small community and voluntary groups, registered charities & social enterprises, with preference given to organisations with a turnover of no more than £300,000 per year in each of the last 2 years.

The grants can support a wide range of activities including:

Initial help with basic skills

Taster work experience including voluntary work

Training, advice and counselling

Job search assistance

Confidence building and personal development

Support to individuals to overcome barriers to learning or employment

The programme is aimed at all people out of work, or those recently made redundant, but with a particular priority given to support for:

People with disabilities or health conditions (including those with learning

difficulties, mental health issues or drug and alcohol dependency problems)

People aged 50 or over and seeking employment

People from ethnic minorities

Women

Lone parents

As some of you maybe aware this week is alcohol awareness week. In Lancashire there are a number of events taking place across the county which a number of you will be involved in if not please watch out for the events and support them. The Lancashire Alcohol Network are asking you and your networks to take part in a survey about the consequences of drinking alcohol which we'd like a wide range of people to complete. It is envisaged that the survey will enable us to get a realistic picture of what the people of Lancashire think. The results of the survey will help us to identify areas where more information or education is needed with regards to alcohol misuse and the effects it can have on a person's life. So please distribute as widely as possible.

The survey will only take a few minutes to complete, please tell us your views by visiting www.surveymonkey.com/WHATSTHEDAMAGE and the answers you give will be anonymous.

People who ask us for training vary greatly in terms of resource availability and we never want finance to restrict us from helping. We have delivered training to groups in real need, with little or no finance, who operate on a purely voluntary basis, in areas of high deprivation and, by contrast, have delivered to groups who have more resources. We hope that groups will examine their own means and pay for our involvement based on this.

With Christmas approaching fast many generous people in the churches and communities of Preston and the surrounding area will be thinking of how they can help to provide some Christmas cheer to homeless people and needy families. This note is an attempt to list some of the needs, some of the organisations involved in helping people and to try to make sure that the right kind of gifts are given to the right people, through the right organisations at the right time.

Helping Homeless People through -- Preston Homeless Forum

The Forum Co-ordinates work of many agencies seeking to help homeless people, especially those sleeping rough throughout the year. Drop in Centres such as those at the Foxton Centre, Lune Street Methodist Church / Fox Street Community, St Wilfrids and The Salvation Army are all members of the forum and keep closely in touch.

In periods of extreme cold weather the Forum is responsible for arranging emergency cold weather shelter provision for those who would otherwise be on the streets.

In the lead up to Christmas and throughout the winter we would appreciate gifts of warm clothing like coats, jumpers, gloves, scarves, socks and (new) underwear, as well as sleeping bags, single duvets, and survival blankets, and toiletries.

In mid December gifts of non perishable seasonal foods will help us provide festive meals at the various drop ins.

Central Methodist Church, Lune Street - homeless drop in sessions between 6pm-9pm Sundays and Mondays (please not at other times)
St Wilfrids – Chapel Street.. Parish Centre Opening Times: Mon, Wed & Fri 10 am to 3 pm, Sat 10 am to 1 pm and Sun after the 9.30 & 11 am Masses
The Luv Preston Charity Shop. Butler Street (between Station and Fishergate Centre). run by the Freedom Centre.

Helping Families in Need – through The Salvation Army

Each year The Salvation Army co-ordinates an appeal for toys and food stuffs which are distributed in suitable parcels to individuals and families who are referred by various social care agencies. Although they do work with homeless people Christmas gifts for this small group have already been promised and organised.

The priority need is for Toys and gifts for children aged 0-16.. They should be new, preferably in the original packaging and not wrapped in gift paper, and bear the CE safety standard mark.

Gifts of non-perishable food including seasonal fare will be welcome, although much of this may be saved and distributed later through the all the year round Food Bank Project.

Gifts should be delivered to The Salvation Army Harrington Street, PR17BN between 24th November and 19th December between 9am -3pm (not Thursdays) or by arrangement made by phoning 01772 55425.

To make a referral for a family you know please email info.sapreston@gmail.com to ask for a referral form (or download a copy from http://sapreston.synthasite.com/ ). You are responsible for arranging to collect and deliver the parcels to your client.

Helping women and their children who face domestic violence through Preston Domestic Violence Services

PDVS are again providing support for women who have faced or fear violence and their children.

They are asking the public to donate:

Cleaning products (e.g. sponges, cloths, antibacterial spray) for bathrooms, kitchens etc. for women and children in the refuge

Toiletries – toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, shower gel

Chocolate selection boxes for children

Helping vulnerable young people living in Preston City Foyer, Lawson Street

Preston City Foyer is Preston's only fully accredited Foyer, we provide accommodation and training to vulnerable young people aged 16-25 to assist them in becoming fully independent and able to self sustain and make a positive contribution to the community. These young people often have very little or no family support and this makes Christmas a particularly difficult time.

Any help you could offer in the way of donations of food, gloves, scarves hats, toiletries that could be donated to make this lonely period more comfortable.

In addition board games, books, jigsaws etc would be appreciated as these can be used to encourage the young people to interact and socialise.

Another thing our young people would benefit from would be donations of A4 or A5 notebooks, pens, pencils, art materials that can be used for training sessions and for college/ training attendance outside of scheme. Due to our residents having limited income and managing independent 1 bedroom flats they are often significantly disadvantaged financially compared to other college goers, who have sufficient parental support.

Our residents would also benefit greatly from any donations of clean bedding, particularly quilts and single bedding sets. This would help them to stay warm over the winter period as residents sometimes have to chose between food and heat as the months grow colder as they manage their own electric and gas accounts on very limited incomes.

Donations can be given directly to the Foyer at the address below.

Donations will be shared equally amongst the residents of the Foyer and any surplus will be shared with our partner foyer in Morecambe or with other local supported housing schemes.

Please note we are unable to accept any donations of furniture, electrical goods or any item containing alcohol.
