Ever wonder what would happen if your church took 'acting justly, loving mercy and walking humbly with God' (Micah 6:8) seriously?

 We'd like to invite you to join us in finding out. 

 

As part of the Micah Challenge UK (www.micahchallenge.org.uk) , Tearfund and Shaftesbury have developed a course for churches to use to help them discover how tackling poverty and pursuing justice, both locally and globally, are at the heart of Christian mission.   We have called it Just People: the Micah course. 

 

We're running two workshops to equip you to run this course at your church. These days will be fun and interactive and we will take you through the material, how it works and answer any questions you have. You will also get to meet people from the previous courses that we have run.

What's the aim of Just People?

Both Tearfund and Shaftesbury share a passion to equip local churches to put this into action.   This course brings together down-to-earth theology, reflection, inspiration and experience with practical exercises.  It will help your church grapple with issues of justice and poverty and think practically about how they can respond effectively as an integral part of their mission.    It has been developed as part of the Micah Challenge UK, a coalition of Christian organisations and churches in Britain, united in their concern to fight poverty - for more log on to www.micahchallenge.org.uk  

 

Has Just People been tested?

Over the last year, we have run seven pilot courses in total, with about 300 people completing the course so far. At each stage have reviewed and reworked the material with the help of feedback. The overall feedback has been extremely encouraging and has highlighted a need for the course.

 

One delegate on a pilot course had this to say:

"Attending Just People has started me on the journey, from just thinking and talking about Integral Mission, to actively pursuing and living it every day. The course hasn't provided all the answers, in fact it has posed a great many more questions, but it has clearly identified Gods calling to me to express the Gospel with integrity in every aspect of my life, to fight for justice both globally and locally"

 

What is Just People like?

We've used a well-tried and tested model of food, input and small-group discussion and added a crucial element of practical action by asking each person to do something each week and report back on how it went. There are six sessions and we ask the church to undertake a practical 'day of action' as an integral part of the course.

 

What are you asking of us?

We are planning to launch the all-singing, all-dancing Just People: the Micah course around Easter 2008 but would like to run a final wave of pilots in the Autumn 2007. We are interested in whether your church or network would be able to run a pilot? We will give you the six session plans so you will not need to prepare the material for the course.

 

What do I do if I'm interested?

Please attend one of two training days in September for anyone interested in running a course.

Dear Members,

 

The Lancashire Forum of Faiths is undertaking a project to link schools with volunteers of "faith" - this would be to speak about their respective faiths. For example speaking about their personal experiences of practising a particular faith so that it becomes "real" to those who are studying it rather than just learning from a book.

 

This would be for schools across Lancashire but volunteers would be linked with schools, who express an interest and, those that are as close in distance to the individual as possible. Travel expenses will be paid for volunteers and training will be provided to undertake this work.

 

We feel that this type of informal activity will allow pupils in schools to ask questions and generate discussion about faith in general which would otherwise not be achieved from simply learning from a book.

 

If you are interested or know of anyone who would be interested in this project then please get in touch with me at the details below. We have set up a provisional date of MONDAY 13th AUGUST at 10am (venue to be confirmed) for all prospective volunteers to meet each other and learn more about the project and the contribution that you can make.

Urban practitioner and author Bob Linthicum believes that Jesus never intended the church to become an institution; he intended it to be a people of power, seeking to transform the world. This day is a unique opportunity to work with him and explore how Jesus intended the church to use power.Power is the capacity, ability and willingness to act. Most people and systems use power to dominate and control. But others have used it relationally in order to liberate, transform and even save.

The day will focus on how Jesus used power relationally and will present detailed power strategies that can enable Christian groups and churches to build productive relationships, address the primary issues of the people and develop strong leaders and redeemed communities.

Bob Linthicum has been rebuilding poor urban communities since 1955. He has led churches in Chicago and Detroit where he helped form nine community organisations, people-businesses and housing efforts. From 1985 to1995, he headed the urban work of World Vision. Since 1996, he has been the president of Partners in Urban Transformation and is the author of fourteen books, including his most recent book, Building a people of power.

COMPUTERS DON’T BYTE
A series of FREE Taster Sessions

for people who want to explore learning to use information technology, perhaps for the first time
at The Salvation Army, Harrington Street, Preston PR1 8DU

We have just opened a new state of the art computer learning suite with 10 computers operating the latest Microsoft Vista software, and broadband internet, complete with all the other equipment needed for music, video making, and digital photography. Use of the equipment will be free to local residents during our weekly open access (internet café) sessions, and various other community learning courses, clubs and projects will be arranged.

But maybe:
· You’ve never switched on a computer in your life
· You learned a bit of IT at school but everything has changed
· You want to upgrade your knowledge and skills of Office software to get a better job
· You want to pursue a leisure interest involving ICT but just haven’t got a decent PC or internet connection at home.
· You want to be able to browse the internet, book tickets or email your auntie in Poland.

These taster sessions are for you:


They’ll be very informal and we will start by getting to know you and finding out why you are interested and what you’d like to be able to do in the computer suite. Our friendly team will be happy to answer all your questions and won’t confuse you with technical jargon or “geek – speak”.


Each person is encouraged to attend two sessions. There is a limit of 12 places on each session. There is no cost and there will be free food and a cuppa each time:

In Session 1:

· We’ll show you round the suite and explain the system we will operate.
· We’ll look at how to get information from the internet and send emails
· We’ll show you how to write and print documents and use the computer to do maths.
· We’ll get you registered as a user and give you a chance for some hands on experience.

In Session 2:


· We’ll show you how to take, edit and print digital photos.
· We’ll see how the computers work with videos and projectors
· We’ll look at the music and sound recording abilities of our suite
· We’ll answer any questions you may have and give you more opportunities to use the machines.

Our taster sessions are aimed at six particular groups of people:

		Hilton in the Community Foundation makes grants to smaller charities that work with young people, especially education, awareness and training. There are no application deadlines and grants can up to £50,000. Download a copy of the guidelines and application form. For further details phone 020 7605 7733 or email. The P F Charitable Trust supports a range of causes, with youth welfare featuring highly. Written applications are considered monthly for part of the £3 million a year grant fund: D H Pocknee, Ely House, 37 Dover Street, London, W1S 4NJ. Phone 020 7409 5600. The Hedley Foundation mainly funds registered charities supporting young people through education, training, health and welfare. It also supports those helping the disabled and the terminally ill. Most grants are less than £5,000 and you can apply at any time (next meeting 25 July). Download the application form or contact Pauline Barker, 9 Dowgate Hill, London EC4R 2SU. The Government Funding website is a useful resource to keep in touch with what government grants and funding are available. You can search the site or enter your criteria to be emailed when a relevant fund becomes available. Comic Relief runs a Disadvantaged Communities Programme that makes grants of up to £5,000 to local community groups and charities that address social and economic deprivation within specific geographic areas such as a housing estate, neighbourhood or village and have a turnover of less than £150,000. Applications can be made at any time. For further information or download an application form. Waste Recycling Environmental Limited (WREN) make grants under the Landfill Communities Fund. 		The National Christian Alliance on Prostitution (NCAP) has produced a new church resource called 'Breaking the Chains'. This includes case studies and materials as well as practical suggestions for churches working with women involved in prostitution and is available for £5 +p&p. Conference gets to grips with migrant workers

Arun District Council is part of a multi-agency partnership that organised a national Expanding Communities conference in March 2007, to debate the growth of migrant workers in the UK.

The conference was designed to:

• discuss how migrant workers fit into existing communities
• discuss issues arising from their presence within the local community
• debate how councils and public, private and voluntary sector agencies are addressing these workers' needs

Jesus in the City - Bristol

Only ten days to go before the Jesus in the City Congress in Bristol

 

 

'Setting People Free' (as part of marking the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slave trading) Exploring the good news of Jesus in three ways:

1. releasing captives
2. challenging oppression
3. celebrating jubilee, especially for people in poverty.

The three themes will form the centre of the work on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There will be prayerful worship to begin each day; a mix of workshops, seminars and visits, sharing inspiration from local projects in Bristol and around the UK. Each evening in the worship celebration speakers from local projects and internationally known people from around the UK and beyond will bring our ideas together. These include:
