1.  Sunday 2nd Sept - 3pm PNE home match clashes with the Guild Ecumenical Service on Avenham

 

PNE were due to play their home match on Saturday 1st Sept but that clashed with the Trades Procession and the Police asked them to move it.  It is now being played at 3pm on Sunday 2nd Sept - the same time as the Guild Ecumenical Service on Avenham.

 

You will be aware that the Guild Service is a once in 20yr event, with the Archbishops, etc. here too.  For PNE season ticket holders this will be a major clash.

 

If there's anyone in your church who goes on North End and who would also want to be at the Guild Ecumenical Service please ask them to contact (email/phone/write) PNE to ask them to move the PNE match - there are alternatives times.

2.  Sunday 2nd Sept - Guild Ecumenical Service CHOIR - rehearsals 7pm each Thursday in the Preston Minster

 

Dear Friends.

 

Some of you will have previously received an email from me regarding the set up of the "Preston Community Choir". This is being done in conjunction with Preston Parish Arts and Education Trust (PPAET) and also The Preston Guild.

 

I have been asked to put the choir together in time to sing at the Preston Guild Ecumenical Service on Sunday 2nd September 2012.

 

We had our first rehearsal on Thursday 19th and to be honest, the turnout was somewhat underwhelming. I very much appreciate people have been involved with other guild projects and also other commitments. I would like to take this opportunity to ask for your assistance. Could you please pass this information on to anyone you know who might want to join the Preston Community Choir.

We are rehearsing at the Preston Minster each Thursday Evening between now and the Ecumenical Service. Rehearsals are FREE.

 

Here is a copy of the original email sent out:

 

"I have been asked by the Parish of Preston and the Preston Guild Team to bring together a community choir for the purposes of the Preston Guild Ecumenical Service 2012.

 

I am approaching you to ask whether you have or know of anyone who can sing that may want to join us for this very special occasion. This is a fantastic event for members of various choirs, and the wider community, to join forces to celebrate the Preston Guild 2012.

 

I am looking to bring together a full choir of Sopranos, Altos, Tenors and Basses. Due to space restrictions, I have 30 seats available in the choir section of the big top. However, if numbers allow, I would like to have the remaining members of the choir out in the congregation, bolstering from within.

 

Rehearsals will be each Thursday Evening (starting on Thursday 19th July) from 19:00 – 21:00 at the Parish Church of St. John, The Minster.

 

Any assistance you could give me during this rehearsal period would be very much appreciated."

 

This is a Community Choir, run for and (eventually) by the Community! There are a lot of opportunities for performances in the future with such a choir. Locally and nationally.

 

I would very much appreciate any assistance you could give my, simply by either passing this on to your contact lists, telling people at your next meetings and generally spreading the word.

3. End of the Guild, Last Night of the Proms - Saturday 8th December,2012. 7.30pm at the Preston Minster       This is an evening I have organised that should appeal to all - including the Nutcracker Suite, The Harry Potter Suite, The Dambusters and some Christmas favourites.  The evening will end with Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem etc. The audience are encourage to wear red, white and blue and to bring a flag to wave!  I have some tickets. They are also available from the Minster, or by sending a cheque payable to PPAET and a stamped addressed envelope to PPAET, The Parish Office, St. John's Minster, Church Street, Preston, PR1 3BT.  Tickets will also be on sale at the Guild Hall Box Office - who will charge a booking fee.  40% of any profit will go to the Rosemere Cancer Foundation. We can assist you with funding applications, organising events or activities, increasing your group numbers, finding out where to go for help and much more.

Capital grants for places of worship - Deadline 30 August

A one-off capital grant scheme worth £1.1 million has been made available for listed places of worship until April 2013.  The Church of England and the National Churches Trust will distribute the funds, which have been provided by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.  The Church of England has received £781,000 which it will allocate across its dioceses. The National Churches Trust has received £319,000 and will run a community grants scheme open to all listed places of worship that are not in the Church of England's care. The deadline for applications to this scheme is 30th August 2012.  Grants will allow listed places of worship across the country to create new extensions and facilities, including toilets and kitchens, and to improve access and energy efficiency.

PCAN's Listening Skills planning group met recently and is proposing to put on in November a two session course entitled;

BECOMING A WELCOMING CHURCH

The dates have been set for two Wednesday evenings 14^th and 21^st November. Venue to be confirmed. Please mark these dates in your diary and church calendar now. Posters and full details to follow.

WHO IT IS FOR : Any Christian in Preston and the surrounding area who is concerned that people arriving to worship in their church is properly welcomed, warmly and sensitively approached, feels listened to and valued so that they will want to come again. The sessions will be specially valuable for church leaders, door stewards, sidespeople, welcoming teams, small group leaders and those with a pastoral ministry.

CONTENT : This will be an interactive course where we will all seek to share our experiences and ideas. In the first session we will get to know each other share how things happen in our various churches, and try to identify good practice and difficult issues that sometimes arise. These will be developed into an agenda for us to address in the second week in the light of relevant professional knowledge, skills and resources.

FURTHER PLANNING : The planning group will be meeting again to finalise the shape of the two sessions and to assign roles to various people on Tuesday 2^nd October at Central Methodist Church Lune Street. We would welcome those who have previously been part of the listening skills team and other people with an interest to join us in this planning process.

Homeless Drop in faces cheese famine.-- Cheese Donors needed

The drop in for homeless and vulnerable people at Central Methodist Church provides meals for up to 50 people in need every Sunday and Monday evening.

 

One of the favourite items on the menu is cheese - on toast or with jacket potatoes.  It is also the most expensive item to buy and as a (semi) perishable item not usually found in food donations from the people and churches that support the work.

FAITH TRAIL - 15th JULY 2012

 

Ever wondered what's in that Christian Church? How about that Muslim Mosque,  Hindu   Temple  – or that Sikh Gurdwara? And what are the beliefs of the different faiths, and what about the history of these faiths in  Preston ?

 

Organised by the Preston Faith Forum, the Faith Trail offers you a chance to discover a little bit more about the different faiths and the communities associated with them. At each location someone from that faith explains the basics of that particular faith, the history of the particular location in  Preston , and how they engage with their local community. There is plenty of time for questions and answers – everyone who has taken part in the faith trail has been extremely positive about the experience.

 The next Faith Trail in the Guild 2012 series will take place on 15th July starting at 9.30am and will visit a a hindu temple, sikh gurdwara (where refreshments are available), a church, and a mosque. Join us on this minibus tour for a first-hand experience to discover for yourselves the unique atmosphere of the living, worshipping faith communities of  Preston .

1.       Preston Parenting Co-ordination Project:  To engage a provider for 2 years that will co-ordinate the delivery, evaluation and quality of parenting courses across Preston.

2.       Preston Family Support Service:  To engage a provider that can deliver family support for targeted wards/schools in Preston to increase, engagement, attendance and attainment

3.       Preston Domestic Abuse Service:  To engage a provider that has the knowledge and expertise that can deliver domestic abuse services for schools and Primary aged children.

Rededication service Around 1000 people attended Church Urban Fund's rededication service at St Paul's Cathedral on 18 June, celebrating 25 years of our work tackling poverty in England. The sermon was preached by the Archbishop of Canterbury who reflected on seeing the hidden realities of poverty - and the marginalised people - in our society: "I believe that what the Church Urban Fund has done in the quarter century of its existence is to encourage us to see what otherwise we might not have seen. This is what we pray for the Church Urban Fund in its new work, in its new partnerships - that they will indeed watch for those who feel invisible." See the archbishop's full sermon. New Joint Ventures with dioceses Our experience of tackling poverty has shown that long-term, sustainable, local solutions are the most effective means of transforming deprived communities. Church Urban Fund is establishing new Joint Venture partnerships with Anglican dioceses to do just this - by working together we can offer more effective support for local workers, combine resources and help to develop local solutions in the diocese to issues of poverty. The Spirit Level documentary film Many of you will have heard of the award-winning book The Spirit Level, which highlighted the damage that increasing inequality has done to our society, especially for those in the poorest households, and what we can do about it. This book is now to be turned into a film, which given the success of our poverty search tool, we believe will be a very powerful resource in the fight against poverty. Also, the film is being financed in an exciting way – by crowd funding, in which small amounts of money from lots of people helps to pay for the film.
