NEXT FULL MEETING OF PCAN

This will be a formal meeting of PCAN where we will adopt significant changes to the Constitution and elect officers and a steering group to take the work forward on a sound basis of governance. Agendas and documents will be circulated in early June.
We will also aim to talk in more detail about unemployment and mission and community involvement in the inner east part of Preston.
We also talked today about the importance of opportunties to speak to church congregations at Sunday worship about some of the social action, project, opportunities, spiritual motivations, Biblical underpinnings etc. If you church would like to invite a representative to do anything from a five minute prayer spot.. to preach.. please do get in touch.
Another date for your diary is the evening of Wednesday 20th July at Fulwood Methodist Church when we will be inviting people to think and learn more about listening skills and pastoral ministries. Posters will follow soon.

supports people who have a learning disability to lead positive lives.
We are looking for volunteers who believe everyone desires and deserves to lead life to the full, and have time and skills that they would be willing to share with a person who has a disability.
Volunteer opportunities include
Working as part of a team in gardening, catering, art &craft or pastoral activities.
Befriending someone on a one to one basis perhaps to take them to the football, or out for coffee etc
Every skill and interest a volunteer has is valuable to us.

Also, volunteering opportunities are likely to arise in the near future to support people in the community. The service user group comprises people who require some support in independent living. Some may have been former members of the Fox Street Community. The required tasks will depend upon the needs of the individual requiring outreach support. Befriending; budgeting; help with negotiating bureaucracy; cooking, shopping and so on. The time commitment, as with the cyber charity shop is dependent upon the availability of individual volunteers and again, this work would be supported by a Methodist Action employee(s).

New Edition Volunteering Bulletin
The Third (May 2011) edition of our CROSSOVER bulletin of volunteering opportunities can be downloaded by going to the PCAN website www.pcan.org.uk and following the link on the left to the volunteering page.
Unfortunately we do not have the funds to print this issue but it is a 4 page pdf file which can be printed as 4 single sides of A4 or as a double sided folded 4 page booklet. We hope churches will print their own supplies and distribute with their church notices.

About the venue:
If you have not been to Hothorpe Hall, you are in for a treat. A restored manor house dating back to 900AD, it is located in a small village in Leicestershire with wonderful views of green fields, sheep and stars at night (a special treat for us city types). The bedrooms have been renovated recently, the food is consistently good and the staff are friendly. We have exclusive use of the building so if you want time away to reflect there is always space. Has the cost gone up?
We're aware that many of you are feeling financially pressured, both in your ministry and life. We've tried hard to keep the cost the same as last year while also trying to cover our costs. The single room rate is the same as last year but the shared room price has gone up by £5. This still means that we subsidise the event to make it possible for people from churches and community projects with limited budgets to come. Even more reason to book by 30 June and save £20!
Please note: this event will be very popular and spaces are limited due to offering single rooms so please book ahead in order not to be disappointed

Training Day on transforming communities and local neighbourhoods
The URC's Church Related Community Work unit has teamed up with Staffordshire University to offer a practical, interactive day for anyone interested in transforming communities and local neighbourhoods entitled Community Work & Community Ministry: Looking to the Future. The event will be held on Saturday 18 June at Staffordshire University, Stoke-on-Trent. Keynotes by Ann Morisy and Fran Beckett will be followed by discussion groups on a range of Christian community work issues. Church Urban Fund's Mustard Seed Grants scheme
Church Urban Fund's Mustard Seed Grants scheme offers up to £5,000 to church projects in deprived communities that are working to tackle poverty. Ongoing and core funding is not eligible but community audits, pilot projects, start-up equipment, trustee and volunteer training, evaluation and needs assessments are included. There are no deadlines. Read the guidelines, contact a local regional contact to get advice on whether your project is appropriate and they will provide an application form.
