a FEAST for Lancashire!
Our Anglican, Methodist and URC partners in Lancashire are currently exploring how best to support and encourage 'Fresh Expressions' of church, and looking to the possibility of setting up a Fresh Expressions Area Strategy Team (or 'FEAST' for short!) At the moment, we are trying to 'map' the Fresh Expressions that are currently happening across the county. You have received so many emails about the Guild, and even many updates regarding medals, videos and messages from the core team. However I built up such a strong relationship with so many of you over the 4 years we worked together, and visited so many of your churches, I really want to tell you how happy I feel about the immense presence we made in contributing to Guild events.
Much thrilled me during Guild week, in particular the vast numbers who were part of the ground-breaking celebration which was our Ecumenical Service. It was not only the largest indoor event of Preston Guild 2012, but one which can inspire Britain to greater Christian unity. Since I was on a float in the Churches' procession I was unable to see much of it, but felt totally happy and confident with all I saw that we had made a tremendous impact with liveliness, creativity and unity. You just have to see what I found last night which thrilled me to the core.
Here is the collection of videos taken by Lancashire One and now available on the web. Having found these about three in the morning, I could not refrain from seeing them all and found them so heartwarming. Thank you so much everyone for the joy you showed, and the tremendous work which went into the whole procession. What a fantastic crowd of happy people. How inclusive we were: masses of infants and children, lots of elderly people given a chance to take part, wheel chairs galore. schools involved, and everyone having such a good time. The joy of Christ in our lives spills out for all to see.
As for creativity, you absolutely surpassed everything we'd hoped for. Immeasurable creativity and such a colourful procession. We knew we were asking a lot by suggesting every person was in costume. You matched up to the highest ideals while showing incredible ingenuity and resourcefulness in costuming and float building. We were real music makers too, and a lot of dancing and waving showed your own enthusiasm and delight. You know how much prayer support and work was put into this. It really seemed God's dream.
Most of all, the whole procession seemed like one church's offering, the spirit of togetherness was so apparent. The viewpoint of the procession was not the most convenient place, being a stage where straggling seemed to take over. Not so with this! one big body of people on the move with boundless enthusiasm. It was wonderful. I'm sure a DVD will bring this home to us but I know you will enjoy seeing the fruit of so much goodwill in these four videos.
Liz Pugh was immensely thrilled with the spirit of the procession, especially the use of workshop inspired skills, she and made a comment I value highly to the LEP which I will quote here:
Liz Pugh of Walk the Plank, whose creative agency acted as advisers to each of the four Guild processions, applauded everyone for taking part. She said: "It is completely unlike any other procession I have ever worked on. The sense of ownership is massive."
As a member of the core team I can say we have nothing but gratitude as well as respect for the support of the Guild team, in particular Phil Walsh and Alison Young. It was work, hard work, but it was fun and made so much easier. Your own willingness contributed overwhelmingly to this.
You gave the best Christian witness we could make which is what we set out to do. You also inspired with the contemporary and relevant message we wanted to share. Thank you so much for every little detail which went into this memorable event. I'm afraid I only have the emails of those people I was personally contacting till after the Preston Passion. Ken has others which he may be able to contact, but do share this with your communities. It will give them joy. What a great Guild, and what an enormous contribution to the region in such a difficult time!
The future still holds a Christmas event, but the door is wide open for us to enjoy further worship, outreach and friendship after the inspiring unity of Preston Guild 2012.

Service Manager (Full time £24000-£28000)
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to be part of a growing charity. The ideal candidate will be an innovative, forward thinking individual with the ability to maintain relationships with a variety of different organisations and lead a multi disciplinary team of workers within our homeless and accommodation services in Preston. There will be the opportunity to represent the charity at a variety of multi agency forums, and work with project steering groups to continually review the service. You will have extensive experience in providing professional supervision and support, safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults, along with the ability to think strategically, ensuring that services meet contractual requirements in a person centred way. You will be flexible in your approach, and will be expected the work flexibly to meet the needs of the service.
Deputy Manager (Full time £21000-£23000)
You will have extensive experience providing support to vulnerable adults, and have the ability to provide safe, professional and quality supervision to staff. You will have the ability to deal effectively with safeguarding incidents, and conduct thorough person centred risk and needs assessments that are person centred and empowering. You will have passion and enthusiasm for the client group and a significant knowledge of issues faced by those who are homeless. You will be expected to work flexibly, and be part of a staff rota that includes on call, weekends and evening work.

Supplies of Specific Foodstuffs needed At the homeless drop in at Central Methodist Church
The Methodist Action drop in for homeless and vulnerable people operates at the Central Methodist Church in Lune Street on Sunday and Monday evening each week .. They too are short of food supplies and rely on donations from churches, community groups and the general public.
To provide a hot meal from their regular limited menu they require tins of:
Beans - Hot pot - Beef stew - Curry - Hot dogs - Tuna - Soup Also: orange squash and sugar.

URGENT HARVEST APPEAL to support the Community Food Bank at the Salvation Army - Please forward this information
Last month 297 households were helped by the provision of emergency food parcels from the Community Food Bank at The Salvation Army.
This is just one indicator of increasing poverty and distress among local families as they struggle to manage in these austere times.
As a result the shelves are almost empty and if the provision of help to the most needy people in Preston is to continue they need to be restocked.
At this time of year many churches and schools will be planning Harvest Festivals celebrations and making collections of food stuffs. We will be extremely grateful if you can make donations to the Food Bank.

Christians to be urged to engage more with Society
CHRISTIANS in Lancashire are to be urged to plan a more active role in society and public life.
Christian Concern, in association with Myerscough College, is hosting a special day conference, entitled 'Awake Arise Preston', Saturday October 6th. at Myerscough College, Preston, and delegates will be addressed by a range of speakers, including Phillip Blond, the Director of the influential think tank 'ResPublica', author of the influential book 'Red Tory', whose ideas have been credited with steering the agenda around the Big Society . Prior to entering politics and public policy he was a senior lecturer at Lancaster University.
Other speakers include the Rt Revd Geoff Pearson, the Bishop of Lancaster, Andrea Minichiello Williams, barrister and Chief Executive Officer of Christian Concern, Alan Craig of the Christian People's Alliance and a Christian Doctor Alistair Murdoch from Blackburn.
The 'Awake Arise' day will help individuals and churches understand how they can Biblically and effectively engage with society at both national and local levels – and within prevailing culture they live in.
The Rt Revd Geoff Pearson, the Bishop of Lancaster, said: "Truth and love are key for our nation's well-being. 'Awake Arise' provide a real opportunity to grapple with a biblical worldview, ensuring that the truth element of the issues facing us today are closely examined so that Christians are able to respond in love."
The event will consider the Christian response to pressing social issues and identify practical ways in which churches and Christians can bring the life-transforming love, goodness and truth of Jesus Christ into their communities and nation.
Andrea Williams said: "Never before has there been a greater need to equip the church to proclaim truth in love. The church must take its stand for righteousness in our nation it must find its voice to declare it boldly. We are living in an unprecedented time, where great lengths have been taken to push Christian faith out of public life. We cannot afford to allow this to keep happening. It is time for churches to awake and arise, to go out and be the salt and light within the communities they are called to reach for Christ".

Volunteers needed St Matthew's Mission Work Club : Monday afternoons - Please make this known
St Matthew's Mission Work Club
The Work Club is run by 2 volunteers who are members of St Matthew's Church under the supervision of the Vicar and the Parochial Church Council of the Church.
The Club was set up in April 2012 with a £3,000 grant from JobCentrePlus which enabled us to buy 5 laptops and a printer and an internet connection.
The Club meets weekly on a Monday from 1pm to 3.30 pm at St Matthew's Mission, Acregate Lane, Preston, PR1 5QQ.
In the spring and summer we had between 4 and 11 clients per session.
We need more volunteers to help run the club.
The list below are the skills we'd like from volunteers who help with the Work Club. We'd be happy to have volunteers could offer just one of these skills. We are looking for volunteers who can make a regular commitment, weekly, fortnightly or even just once a month, but dependability is important once a commitment is made. We'd welcome people to come and look and see if this is something they'd like to try before committing to be a volunteer.
Helping clients write a CV
Showing clients how to use the internet to look for jobs. We do have a web site: www.theworkclub.org.uk which gives clients a start.
Giving clients help with interview skills for when they have an interview
Discussing with clients the sort of things that will increase their chances of getting a job.

Church Urban Fund - September Tackling Poverty e-newsletter

Thrive Together Birmingham raises the profile of poverty in Birmingham, particularly amongst clergy and churches. It was instrumental in setting up the Birmingham Churches Winter Night Shelter earlier this year; helped local groups to secure funding for a much-needed Employment Resource Centre in King's Norton; supported several churches in planning new work and trained new Mission Apprentices in the city.
Together Lancashire is co-ordinating the setting-up of food banks across Burnley, ensuring good geographic coverage of the service; it is in early discussions with local job clubs; is looking at ways that they could work together to deliver training, and is supporting homelessness work in the diocese.
Together Newcastle has brought churches in the Wansbeck area of the diocese together to form a food bank; enabled an existing community project to set up a furniture distribution service to help destitute families, and facilitated a new partnership between a youth work project and a local church, extending the church's reach into the community.
Transformation Cornwall is working with a number churches across the diocese that want to offer community services or the use of their buildings; it is helping the Community Laundrette in Camelford to develop long-term business plans; mentoring several new projects as they get started and brought isolated projects in Launceston to work together to create a co-ordinated food bank with better links to the community.
