Dear Guild contacts in local churches / groups

 

Probably the last update before Guild week, which is promising to be a hugely exciting and uplifting occasion.

 

Firstly on the ecumenical service, for which the tickets have all been allocated, but as always there will be a few who are unable to attend, so we imagine that a few without tickets may be able to get in if they arrive around 2.30. There is to be a DVD made of the service, retailing at £5, and I believe orders will be taken on the day. There will also be a collection taken on the day to help meet the not inconsiderable costs. In advance a huge thanks to the small group who have put this service together – only the second time that it has been done.

 

On the processions, some great news here which is that the Guild team have sourced a supply of Guild medals at the competitive price of £1.50. Available from early October, and ordering details next week.  Details of the content of each of the processions will be in a special LEP supplement NEXT TUESDAY. In addition, there ARE going to be separate leaflets giving details of each procession. There will be 20,000 for each procession, which Guild staff will hand out to spectators. All other details of the procession are as per information from Ken Curphey and Richard Baxter – this will have gone to the person who registered your church / group

Reminder – there is still the opportunity to take part as Christians in both the community procession (Friday, 11 am), and the torchlight procession (Saturday the 8th, 8 pm). Preston Faith Forum has an entry in each, and we are looking for more people from the different faiths to join – on the Friday for those who are members of the faith forum, and on the Saturday as representative of the different faiths, when we will have a common theme of light. Anyone interested can contact me direct.

 

For the churches Ride and Stride, followed by an informal service of creation & recreation, Brockholes, 4 pm, Saturday 8^th (poster attached + sheet explaining the R&S) there are about a dozen churches from Preston who have said they will be open during the day to receive visitors. The current list is Kirkham st Michaels, Wesham, Treales, Wrea Green, Elswick, Woodplumpton, Lund and in Preston: St John, Broughton, Christ Church, Fulwood, Fulwood URC, Fulwood Methodist, St Claires Fulwood, Our Lady and St Edward, Fulwood, St Margaret – Ingol, Emmanuel, English Martyr's, The Minster, St Wilfrid's, St Walburge's , St Stephen's, Maria Goretti – Ribbleton. Broughton and St Stephens are right on the GUILD WHEEL, and Maria Goretti is close by. For riders a great chance to use the wheel at the same time as visiting local churches – and both riders and striders can find out a bit more about the churches across the city with whom you have been working this year.

 

 

For your reflection – we now have the involvement through this Guild circulation of 112 churches in and around Preston. I wonder what thoughts that generates as to what we might do as  a Christian community following this Guild year??

Inspire Awards 2012 STILL open for nominations  for a few more weeks

The Inspire awards – an annual celebration of the unsung heroes of Christian work in communities - is now open for nominations.

Individuals and projects can both be nominated for the competition, which culminates with an awards ceremony for the short-listed candidates in the Palace of Westminster in November 2012.

This year's categories are:

• an individual Christian in the UK who is an inspiring role model

• a UK-based Christian-run project serving its local area

• individuals or projects working with children or young people in the UK that are making a real impact in a local area

Steve Clifford, general director of the Evangelical Alliance, said: "These awards are about celebrating the work of Christians quietly going about their work but having a significant impact in their community. Christians contribute massively to the social good of our country but are often unsung, unreported and unheard of. Let these awards give someone or some project their moment in the limelight so they can be an inspiration for others."

Pastor Peter Cunningham, CEO of Green Pastures Housing and a winner at last year's awards, said:  "At Green Pastures we have a passion to eradicate homelessness and winning the award gave everybody involved the feel-good factor and a sense of belonging to an incredible team across the UK. It was fantastic for the team but it also highlighted the amazing work that our partners do. It also means something to those who have been housed - it helps them on their journey, and gives them a little bit more self esteem. Thank you Inspire Awards."

Russ Bravo, editor of Inspire magazine, said: "When we launched the Inspire Awards in 2008, we wanted to show how life is being made better all over the UK because of the faith of ordinary men and women doing extraordinary things. They're being good news as well as sharing good news. Food banks, debt counselling, Street Pastors, caring for the young and the old, parenting courses, summer clubs – you name it, we're doing it. This is what Serve's all about. And it really excites me, because through Serve, we're able to tell each other these stories. The young man was invited into Colchester Baptist Church and given a hot drink and something to eat, explains Fiona Prentice, Chairman of Open Door's Executive Committee. Afterwards they were struck by the thought that this was only a temporary measure and they wanted to offer something more. So Open Door was started in the church's entrance hall with a few helpers. Iftar with the homeless 11/08/2012

 

On Saturday 11th August, Preston Muslims are hosting an Iftar (break fast) with the Homeless @ Preston Flag Market at 8.15pm.

Iftar (break fast) is a communal activity, we hope to share this experience with the homeless of Preston. The long fasts during this summer, create empathy with the poor and gives an understanding of how it feels to be hungry and thirsty. This is our way of showing solidarity with the homeless and sharing food together.
