Preston Community Network News and Events Firstly, welcome to our very first issue and a sincere thank you for subscribing. It's our intention to make this newsletter a valuable resource for all Voluntary Community Faith Sector Organisations in Preston and a useful communications tool for those supportive elected representatives, public sector partners and agencies we all work with. It is very much a two way street however and the output will only ever be as good as the input you give us. While we will do our best to cover sources, the national and local media, national umbrella and regulatory Organisations etc. there's a limit to what we can do without your help! Please don't be a stranger and email any information you wish us to circulate on your behalf. It's intended that the newsletter is issued on an end of week basis and, ideally, your contribution should be a few lines and a link to a website or attached Word or Pdf document. New Child Abuse Inquiry Fund Launched - Closes 2 March 2015
A new £2million fund has been set up to support non-statutory organisations in England and Wales that have experienced an increase in demand as a direct result of the announcement of the Child Abuse Inquiry on 7 July 2014. Applications for this fund must meet the following criteria: Be from non-statutory organisations (who work with either adults or children) in England and Wales seeking funding to cover the costs of support for survivors of child sexual abuse which is a direct result of the Child Abuse Inquiry; Include a description of the types of support provided, the number of people supported (including a demographic breakdown), and an explanation of how the funding applied for will be used to provide that support; Include a clear, itemised breakdown of costs already incurred (including the date those costs were incurred and supported with evidence); Include a clear explanation of future costs, why they are forecast and an itemised breakdown of the estimated costs (including when they are expected to be incurred; Explain any existing income from government and public bodies, and any links between this funding application and that to other funds.

Global Fund for Women - Women's Fund - Opens 15 March 2015 - Closes 30 June 2015
The Global Fund for Women is a publicly supported grant-making foundation that advances human rights by investing in women-led organizations worldwide. Its focus is on ending gender based violence, promoting the economic and political empowerment of women and sexual and reproductive health rights. To be eligible for a grant, organisations must be based outside the United States, have as its primary focus advancing women's equality and human rights and women must fill all or most of the leadership roles in the organisation. Grants usually range from $5,000 to $30,000. First-time grant awards generally range from $5,000 to $13,000 per year.

New Arts Award Access Fund - Closes (Round 1) 27 February 2015
Grants of between £100-£1500 are available to Arts Award centres in England working on Arts Award projects with young people for whom access and inclusion is an issue. Priority will be given to centres that will use the grant to support them to pilot, embed or develop their Arts Award work with these groups. The funds can be used for a rage of activities, including: Discover or explore logs; Bronze, silver or gold guidance booklets; Fees for workshops with a professional or specialist; General art materials, printing costs; tickets for events; Travel to and from a venue; Contribution towards the costs of gold leadership projects; Hire of specialist equipment or specialist venues; Adviser/project management/staff time.

Healthy Hearts Grants for Community Projects - Closes 28 February 2015
Heart Research UK Healthy Heart Grants support innovative projects designed to promote heart health and to prevent or reduce the risks of heart disease in specific groups or communities. Grants of up to £5,000 and £10,000 are available to community groups, voluntary organisations and researchers who are spreading the healthy heart message.

Performing Right Society (PRS) - Closes 27 April 2015
Through the programme, financial support of up to £5000 is available to women musicians to create new music in any genre. This can range from classical, jazz and experimental, to urban, electronica and pop. Through the scheme support is available to Individuals and organizations / groups including: Solo performers; Solo songwriters or composers; Promoters or event producers; Bands/ensembles/orchestras; Local authorities and schools; etc.

BBC Children in Need Small Grants Programme - Closes 1 March 2015
Through the Small Grants programme, funding up to £10,000 is available for projects that combat disadvantage and improve children and young people's lives. In particular, grants are available for projects that help children and young people experiencing: Illness, distress, abuse or neglect; Any kind of disability; Behavioural or psychological difficulties; And / or living in situations of deprivation. Applications for funding are accepted from not for profit organisations such as: Registered charities; Voluntary organisations; Schools; Churches; Community interest groups; etc.

Government Announces New £400,000 Programme to Strengthen Faith Institutions - Closes 2 March 2015
In recognition of the important role played by Faith institutions within their communities, the Department for Communities and Local Government has announced that it is seeking bids from organisations to run a £400,000 programme to help strengthen and support faith institutions. This will include running a small grants programme to help support faith institutions at a local level. The department is seeking applications from organisation or consortium with the vision, capability and credibility to help strengthen and support faith institutions to face challenges such as: Finding suitable training; Advice or support when needed; Sharing best practice; Engaging with women and young people; Having strong links with the wider community. To be eligible to receive the grant an organisation must be a registered charity or have a charitable purpose. To ensure that delivery can begin rapidly, the Department will be seeking one organisation or consortium to deliver the whole programme.

Pioneer Grants Available from the Elton John Aids Foundation - Closes 3 March 2015
A Pioneer Grant from the Elton John Aids Foundation can be used to support a specific initiative focusing on an individual key population at higher risk of contracting Aids - such as men who have sex with men (MSM), sex workers and injecting drug users - within an individual country. Projects can be multi-year and there is no prescribed award amount but projects must fulfil the following criteria: Have a focus on service delivery; Be catalytic in nature, scalable in design and innovative; Be able to track changes such as access to condoms, HIV testing and treatment of programme beneficiaries.

Living Waterways Awards 2015 - Closes 13 March 2015
The Canal and River Trust has announced that the 2015 Living Waterway Awards are now open for entries. Led by an independent panel of experts drawn from the voluntary, environmental, arts, heritage, engineering and architecture sectors, the Living Waterways Awards celebrate the work done by individuals, communities and organisations to improve their canals and rivers, making them exciting places to live, learn and spend time. From inspirational story-telling to dedicated volunteer-led schemes; innovative design and construction projects to pioneering environmental initiatives, there are seven award categories up for grabs. These are: Art and Interpretation; Community and Volunteering; Contribution to the Built Environment; Education and Learning; Natural Environment; Recreation and Tourism; Restoration; Historic Environment.

Funding for Cancer Support Groups and Individuals Affected by Cancer - Closes 13 March 2015
Macmillan Cancer Support has announced that the next closing date for its Cancer Support - Grants scheme is the 13th March 2015. The grants programme aims to fund individuals and groups that support people affected by cancer or campaign to improve cancer care. The grants available include: Start up funds to support new self-help and support project for people affected by cancer; Development funds to support the ongoing activities and development of self-help and support projects for people affected by cancer; User Involvement Grants to encourage the involvement of people affected by cancer in the design and improvement of cancer services; Individual Development Grants to enable people affected by cancer to develop their skills and use their cancer experience to help support others affected by cancer. Applications will be accepted from individuals or groups of people affected by cancer and organisations and professionals working in partnership with people affected by cancer. There will be three further funding rounds during 2015.

Help the Homeless Grant Scheme - Closes 15 March 2015
Grants of up to £5,000 are available towards capital costs to support projects that help disadvantaged individuals in their return to mainstream society, through residential or training facilities. Grants to larger charities may be considered if the project is suitable innovative and only possible for a larger organisation to develop it. All applications must relate to projects that assist individuals in their return to mainstream society, rather than simply offer shelter or other forms of sustenance.

Funding to Support Education in Impoverished Areas - Closes 25 March 2015
The British & Foreign Schools Society (BFSS), which supports educational projects in the UK and around the world, has announced that the next closing date for applications is the 25th March 2015. The Society supports organisations within the UK and internationally that reach out to children in remote or impoverished areas, improving inclusivity in education and providing much-needed facilities. The Society normally makes grants for educational projects totalling about £500,000 in any one year. The majority (85% of grants) are made to charities and educational bodies (with charitable status).

The Weavers Company Benevolent Fund - Closes 30 March 2015
The Weavers' Company, a textile-related, charitable and sociable organisation, has announced that the next closing date for its grants programme is the 30th March 2015. The Weaver's Company Benevolent Fund supports projects working with disadvantaged young people (aged 5 to 30 years) to ensure that they are given every possible chance to meet their full potential and to participate fully in society. The Fund also aims to help young people at risk of criminal involvement to stay out of trouble and assist in the rehabilitation of offenders, particularly young offenders both in prison and after release. Grants are usually no more than £15,000 per annum, and to make sure grants of this size have an impact, we will not fund large organisations. To be eligible for funding, local organisations such as those working in a village, estate or small town should normally have an income of less than £100,000. Those working across the UK should normally have an income of not more than £250,000.

Funding for Cultural and Educational Exchanges with Japan - Closes 31 March 2015
Organisations and schools in the UK that wish to develop links with Japan and Japanese schools are able to apply for funding through the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. The Foundation makes small grants to support activities that support the study of the Japanese language and culture, School, Education and Youth exchanges. In the past the Foundation has made grants towards visits the between the UK and Japan between by teachers and young people and the teaching and development of Japanese language and cultural studies in schools.

Co-operative Bank Customer Donation Fund - Closes 31 March 2015
Organisations that bank with the Co-operative Bank using their Community Directplus Bank Account, have the opportunity to apply for funding through the Bank's Customer Donation Fund. The Customer Donation Fund grows directly in relation to customers' deposits. For every £100 increase in collective balance held in Community Directplus accounts, the Co-operative Bank will add 20p to the fund. Then, twice a year, in April and October, the Bank will judge customers' applications for project funding and distribute a minimum of £5,000 amongst those customers that are successful. Every Community Directplus customer is entitled to make an application for funding for up to £1,000.

Orchard Windfalls Fund 2015 - Closes 31 March 2015
Through the Fund grants of between £100 and £700 are available to schools and community groups for the planting of apple and pear trees with the condition that children aged sixteen or under with the condition that children aged sixteen or under are involved in the planting or, where the trees are too large to be directly handled by them, related educational activities. This educational aspect might be during the design, planning and planting of the orchard or, in schools, it might be part of curriculum related projects that will be enhanced by the preliminary activities or the subsequent availability of fruit trees on or near to the school site. To be eligible planting must take place on publicly accessible land, usually in public or charity ownership. In addition the School or Community Group must be able to raise 25% of planting costs.

Trees for Communities - Closes 31 March 2015
The Tree Council, the lead tree campaigning charity working to promote the importance of trees within the changing environment, has announced that its Trees for Communities grant making programme is now open for applications. The Tree Council will fund up to 4 fruit trees (but no more than that) on semi-vigorous, vigorous and very vigorous rootstocks. If you wish to plant more than 4 fruit trees, please look at the information about the Orchard Windfalls Fund. Funds are available for community groups within the UK who are able to show that children under the age of 16 will be actively engaged in tree planting projects during National Tree Week 2015 (28th November to 6th December 2015). The Tree Council can fund projects between £100 and £700 and successful applicants will receive up to 75% towards their planting costs. For example, if your project totals £700, The Tree Council would offer up to £525. The remaining 25% will need to be secured by the applicant organisation.

War Memorials Grant Scheme - Closes 31 March 2015
English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation, in association with Friends of War Memorials, are providing grants for the repair and conservation of free-standing war memorials in England. These grants are intended to help those who are responsible for the upkeep of war memorials. The grants support the care and preservation of war memorials to a high standard, and to prevent the decay of this important part of our built heritage. Grants will normally be for up to a maximum of 75% of eligible costs, with a maximum grant of £30,000. The minimum grant that can be applied for is £3,000.

Fuserna Foundation Grants Programme - Closes 31 March 2015
Charities that have difficulty raising funds can apply for grants of up to £6,500 through the Fuserna Foundation. The Foundation which operates both in the US and England & Wales supports registered charities that: Have difficulty raising funds due to the lack of cash reserves, statutory funding or good contacts and patrons to assist them; Have projects that alleviate poverty and financial hardship; Relieve sickness and poor health and also support certain "unpopular" causes. Funding is restricted to charities with an income of less than £3 million per year. Grants awarded in the past have ranged from £1,000 - £6,500.

Lloyds Bank's Social Entrepreneurs Programme - Closes 2 April 2015
Lloyds Bank Social Entrepreneurs Programme is open for applications. The programme offers support and finance to 300 social entrepreneurs each year and is split into two different courses. The 'Start Up' course helps new social enterprises get up and running and the 'Scale Up' course supports those looking to grow an existing organisation. All participants on the Scale Up course receive a fully funded place on a 14 day course at The School for Social Entrepreneurs, a grant of £15,000 and a mentor from Lloyds bank. To apply your organisation must be at least 1 year old, have at least one employee and a turnover greater than £25,000.

The Triangle Trust 1949 Fund - Closes 30 April 2015
The Triangle Trust has announced that the next closing date for applications to its grants programme is noon on the 30th April 2015. During this funding round, the Trust will provides grants to not for profit organisations working with carers, The Trust would like to see applicants use these grants to develop sustainable income sources, so that when the grant comes to end the applicant organisation's income will not be reduced. Grants are available for up to £40,000 or 50% of the organisation's current annual income, whichever is lowest, per year for 3 years. The Trust also holds a separate funding round for organisations working with the rehabilitation of offenders or ex-offenders. This is due to open for applications in October 2014.

Volant Charitable Trust - Closes 26 June 2015
Registered charities whose purpose is to alleviate poverty and social deprivation with particular emphasis on children and women's issues have the opportunity to apply for funding through the Volant Charitable Trust. The Trust which was set up by the author J K Rowling also supports research into the causes, treatment and possible cures of Multiple Sclerosis. However this funding stream is currently fully committed and is currently not considering further applications for funding in this area. For projects based in Scotland only, with funding requests of up to and including £10,000 per annum, applications are dealt with by Foundation Scotland

Wolfson Foundation – Disability and Special Needs Grants Programme - (Stage 1) Closes 1 July 2015
Through the programme, the Wolfson Foundation, makes grants of between £15,000 - £100,000 to special schools and colleges as well as charities that work with people with particular health needs or disabilities. Nearly £10 million has been awarded over the last five years, to over 200 different organisations. Grants are made for: New buildings; Major refurbishment work; Equipment; Vehicles.

The Ernest Cook Trust Grants Programme - Closes 31 July 2015
Schools, charities and not for profit organisations wishing to encourage young people's interest in the countryside and the environment, the arts or aiming to raise levels of literacy and numeracy can apply for funding to the Ernest Cook Trust (ECT). The Trust operates two grant making programmes. The small grants programme (under £4,000) supports state schools and small registered charities which would like to undertake projects which meet the Trust's objectives and require a small amount of pump-priming in order for such projects to take place and a larger grants programme for grants in excess of £4,000. Meetings to consider applications for the small grants programme take place bi-monthly throughout the year. The full board of Trustees meets twice a year, in April and September, to consider grants in excess of £4,000. Applications to the small grants programme can be made at any time.

The Radcliffe Trust – Music Grants - Closes 31 August 2015
The Radcliffe Trust has announced that the next deadline for applications to its Music masking grants programme is the 31st August 2015. Through its grant making programme, the Radcliffe Trust supports classical music performance and training especially chamber music, composition and music education. Particular interests within music education are music for children and adults with special needs, youth orchestras and projects at secondary and higher levels, including academic research. The Trustees respond to applications and also initiate their own projects. Applicants must be a registered charity or an exempt charity.

Cash Pot: £22,000 fund created for Preston community project bids
A cash pot of £22,000 is to be created by city leaders, to encourage communities to bid for money for new projects. Preston Council bosses will bring in the new fund this spring, equivalent to £1,000 for every ward in the city, which is designed to set up new neighbourhood initiatives. The scheme will begin in April.

Funding for UK-Germany World War I Projects
A new funding opportunity is available for schools and youth groups to bring young people of the UK and Germany together to facilitate an exchange of ideas, joint learning and open discussions on topics related to World War One. Open to applications from primary and secondary school teachers, trainees and youth workers, there is funding of £500 to £5,000 available for projects that have a high level of interaction between young people in the two countries, be it virtual or through a visit/exchange trip. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and your project should have a start date of at least 6 weeks ahead from when you send your application.

Sport England Small Grants Programme
Formally constituted not-for-profit organisations and statutory bodies such as sports clubs, voluntary organisations, local authorities, schools and governing bodies of sport can apply for grants of between £300 and £10,000 through the Sport England Small Grants Programme. The aim of the fund is to deliver new community projects to either grow or sustain participation in sport or to support talent development. Priority will be given to projects that increase the number of adults participating in moderate intensity sports; and projects seeking to reduce the drop off rates for 16-19 year olds.

Cinnamon Network Micro Grants for Church Community Projects
The Cinnamon Network which supports church community projects across the UK has announced that it has micro grants for churches to start a community project. To date, the Network has supported 21 initiatives such as food banks, community lunches, debt counselling and education projects. Churches in England can apply for £1,500 while churches in both Scotland and Wales can apply for £2,000. The grant amount has to be matched (by £3,000 in England and £2,000 in Scotland and Wales) and this can come from cash, gifts in kind, premises, professional pro-bono services, asset items and salaries. Individual churches or a group of churches working in partnership (which are registered as a charity and have up-to-date accounts) can apply for the grants. There is no deadline and the application process is ongoing.

£10m Social Finance Charity Funding from RBS
The Royal Bank of Scotland has announced that it has £10million available to provide extra Community Business Loans to organisations that find it difficult to access mainstream finance This new investment into the bank's social finance charity, formerly known as the RBS Micro Finance Funds, coincides with a name change to RBS Social & Community Capital (S&CC). Social enterprises, charities, community interest companies and co-operatives can access loan funding from £30,000 up to £1 million for sustainable projects that deliver real social value. Community Development Finance Institutions that provide finance direct to smaller organisations and social enterprises can also apply. There is no deadline and applications for loan funding are open all year round.

New Building Better Opportunities Fund from Big Lottery
Subject to approval from the European Commission, the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) is planning to put up to £260m of Lottery funds against a similar figure from the European Social Fund (ESF) 2014-2020 in order to support communities and people most in need across England. Projects delivering against the 'Promoting Social Inclusion and Combating Poverty' part of the ESF can receive funding in Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) areas according to local priorities, which have been set by the LEPs. This could support projects: Ranging from improving employability for the most disadvantaged; Helping those with multiple and complex needs, to improving financial literacy.LEP area partnerships have made provisional decisions about how much of their ESF allocation to devote to this strand of work, meaning that the amount of main funding available will vary widely across different areas. Ahead of the main funding becoming available from 2015, BIG will also offer Lottery development funding in each of the LEP areas it is working with.

Big Lottery Fund Announces New £150 Trust to Support Community Businesses
The Big Lottery Fund has awarded a £150m endowment to the Power to Change, a new independent grant-making foundation that will champion community businesses across England. The Power to Change will be the largest trust of its kind in Europe and will provide funding and support to existing and new community businesses. Backed by Trinity Mirror and the National Lottery, the Power to Change will support local people who want to save their local library or leisure centre, run their community shop or pub, or start new enterprises to regenerate a neighbourhood or high street. It is envisaged that a full range of the Power to Change funding programmes and support activities will be rolled out later this year. In the meantime the Power to Change will operate an initial grants programme, in conjunction with a call for Community Business Champions to identify existing community businesses already making a difference in their local areas and providing inspiration for others.

Community Sport Activation Fund
Sport England has announced that its £47.5 million Community Sport Activation Fund grant scheme will re-open for applications in Spring 2015 (exact dates to be confirmed). Grants of between £50,000 and £250,000 will be available to: Sports clubs; Schools; Local authorities; And other not for profit organisations to support grassroots sports at a very local level. The fund will provide grants to projects that are based on local need and evidence. Activities that can be funded include: Informal sports opportunities which could lead to regular exercise; Multi-sport activities which provide people with a range of choices and opportunities; Family orientated activities with a focus on 14 plus age group; etc.

As some of you will know PEF has some greenhouses at the PCC Millar Park that require the glass inserting. PEF plans to do this on the 21st Feb (and the 22nd if need be). PEF would welcome help on the day from any volunteers who feel that they; Have the knowledge and experience of erecting greenhouses or have the skills but would like to gain the experience. The meeting time will be 9:30am outside the Continental pub at the bottom of South Meadow Lane in Broadgate. Please dress appropriately for the weather, wear suitable footwear and if possible bring some good work gloves (the glass is safety glass however). I will need to keep a record of how many people will be attending so please let me know if you can help out

Bosses at Preston's Heartbeat charity are celebrating after a campaign to raise £37,000 for its new home smashed its target. The cardiac rehabilitation charity's new base at the former National Football Museum in Deepdale was officially opened on Tuesday night.

Foxton Centre: Worldwide charity challenge to benefit Preston homeless
A Preston charity is set to benefit from a fundraising mission that took the world by storm. The Foxton Centre, who work with rough sleepers, street sex workers, young people, people with alcohol abuse issues and the community, from their Knowsely Street hub, has agreed to accept a donation of £42,000 to use as a fund to help homeless rough sleepers in Preston find a better place to live.

What Women Want - 15 February 2015
Saint Augustin's New Avenham Centre 10am - 4pm
There will be loads of fun exercise activities and workshops for women and girls of all ages to try out and enjoy all free of charge. Including: Beauty treatments, Zumba, Massage, Legs-Bums-Tums, Aerobics, Circuits, Step and Tone, Football, Cycling, Healthy Eating and cookery. Everyone who takes part will receive a goodie bag. Crèche facilities will be available all day for children under 5 years old. We are also fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Care with a raffle.
