Welfare Reform.... LCCs The Care and Urgent Needs Support Scheme

 

From 1^st April, 2013, Crisis Loans and Community Care Grants within the DWP Discretionary Social Fund will be abolished. From that date, within Lancashire, a new local scheme will be established, administered by Lancashire County Council, called The Care and Urgent Needs Support Scheme.

The new local scheme is there to support vulnerable people in urgent need who have no access to other means of support. This might be to allow them to live in the community or to deal with a particular crisis.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the scheme, you must live in the area covered by Lancashire County Council (this excludes Blackpool, and Blackburn with Darwen who have their own schemes)

• be over 16

AND

• On a low income, this would normally mean that you were getting:

  • Income Support,

  • Income based Job Seekers Allowance ( JSA),

  • Income related Employment and Support Allowance ( ESA)

  • or Pension Credit ( Guarantee Credit only)

AND

• Either leaving care or requiring support to stay in the community

OR

• Able to demonstrate that you are without immediate resource to meet the basic needs of yourself and/ or your dependents

As many of you know, I have written a family musical which is a lighthearted look at the Noah story. Lighthearted, but with the same covenantal message. Suitable for children.

 

I should be very grateful if you would use your networks to promote the production of this musical and perhaps even come along yourself. Our church-based theatre group ACTS is performing it with a cast of around 30. The event is in Fulwood Methodist Church itself so there will plenty of room and you can simply pay at the door – or even plead poverty and we might let you in. Who knows – you could be there for the opening night of something which will become world-famous. Think of those first Beatles tickets…..

 

Seriously, your support would be very welcome – even if it is only holding us in your thoughts!

From the 28 March 2013 forms with the old CRB branding on them will no longer be accepted. All DBS Checks should now be carried out using the new DBS branded forms. Grants available from LCC

 

Almost £200,000 to support Lancashire's community groups

Lancashire County Council has announced more than £190,000 for their 2013/14 Local Initiative Fund scheme.

Now in its third year, the LIF scheme provides grants to voluntary, community and faith groups that carry out important work to help communities across Lancashire.

Groups in Lancashire can apply for grants of £1,000 to £5,000 to support their work and help to meet the county council's priorities.

The LIF scheme provides grants to fund new and innovative projects and activities which support three of the county council's priorities: improved outcomes for families; skills and employment; and activities for teenagers.

County Councillor Mark Perks, Chair of the Cabinet Working Group for the Third Sector, said: "In 2012/13, we awarded a total of £224,289 to community groups in Lancashire to deliver a wide range of activities to meet local needs.

"These included family support, digital and social media training, sports, online photo archives, careers and business advice sessions, school holiday activities and many other initiatives.

"We're keen to see more organisations bidding for LIF grants to deliver new and innovative project activity in 2013/14 for the people of Lancashire and help the county council to achieve its priorities."

Life-changing Lotto £50K is up for grabs! The People's Millions launches today, with £50,000 available to improve the lives of people in your local community.   The Peoples Millions is an annual TV competition run by Big Lottery Fund and ITV which awards Lottery funding to community projects that will improve the lives of local people. This year there are four awards of up to £50,000 on offer in each of the 19 ITV regional news areas across the UK.     Anything from youth and environmental projects to schemes that improve employment prospects or help people in need are in with a chance of bagging the Big Lottery Fund cash, provided that entrants can convince their community through a broadcast on ITV regional news that their idea is worthy of the prize. 1.  All Saints is running a Food Hygiene Course this Saturday from 10am to 3pm. I apologise for the late notice but we would like to give members of your church the opportunity to join us. 2.  For the GOOD FRIDAY Walk of Witness we meet at 11.30ish outside St George's Church; then at 11.45 we walk from there, up Lune Street, down Fishergate and into the Flagmarket for a short act of witness at 12noon (including hymns, prayers and a short address).     Fr Andrew     (further details email: andrewteather@googlemail.com )

 

3.   As you may know, I'm leaving Preston soon to be Vicar of St Matthew's, Willesden. My last Mass is on Sunday 14th April at St George's at 10.30am;   I'm installed by the Bishop in Willesden on the 19th April.  I know that people will have things to do on Sundays, but anyone is welcome to come to the Mass. It's been a great four years and I will miss Preston, but relish the challenge to come.

4.   Please find attached a poster in respect of the concert by the Preston Concert Band on 19th April.  The Rotary Club of Preston Guild was formed during the 1992 Guild and since then has raised tens of thousands of pounds for various good causes.  Whilst not a Christian group the majority of members do have a practising faith and are reflective of most denominations across Preston.  Through the concert we are hoping to raise funds for the School in Nepal supported by Preston's Deafway Charity.  Any help you could give in publicising the event would be much appreciated.  Tickets are available through Ian Cherry on 01772 201015.

Due to unforeseen circumstances we made a decision today to postpone the Prayer for Preston Breakfast from this Saturday, March 16th to the following one which is March 23rd.at St Cuthberts from 8.00 a.m.-10-00 a.m.and we sincerely apologise for this late notice. We would appreciate it if you can get the new date publicised in your church this coming w/e and encourage people to join in this ministry of United Prayer for the City.

 

As we have sought guidance we believe that the Spirit has led us to a plan for the future which is basically to have Six Prayer Breakfasts a year on the first Saturday of alternate months, using different venues and focussing on the Guild Legacy events and important issues facing our city. We believe that the success of another Lenten series has been a wonderful answer to prayer and are so thankful that prayer really does change things. 

 

We should appreciate any comments on this plan and welcome suggestions for improving it.

Be part of compiling a good practice document to be sent out to Churches across the country.                             New research to be unveiled at the conference. Together with Christians in Parliament, the Evangelical Alliance has looked into the relationships between local authorities and faith groups across the country. At the Gather consultation the findings of this research will be presented ahead of the publication of the full report later in the spring. This relationship is often strong and fruitful with faith groups providing many services and activities for their community; they are also increasingly taking on formal responsibilities in partnership with their local authority. However, the understanding of faith within authorities is frequently limited and there can be fears and misconceptions that restrict the full flourishing of this relationship.   During the consultation we'll take a look at how engaging with civic authorities is about public leadership. More than just good works, this is about being a voice in and for your community, and it is about leading people into a better life.
