I write with information about our unique training day  - SCHOOL'S OUT - taking place in Burnley on 17th September.


SCHOOL'S OUT - is a unique training event on domestic violence and the impact on women and children exploring the impact from conception through to teenage years - with no power-point or long speeches - just dynamic training and award-winning theatre, including a performance of MOCKINGBIRD HIGH. It is also excellent value for money at only £120 per person including training, materials, refreshments and lunch. It will greatly assist in identifying and understanding abuse and attendance will help improve the ability to help victims through early identification and signposting to specific support services. Information from the day can also be shared with colleagues. 

Although the event takes place in Burnley on 17th September 9.30am to 3.30pm Bookings need to be in by 17th July

I attach a leaflet with further information and a booking form. I wonder if you'd be willing to circulate this information to your colleagues and contacts, please? This will be of interest to anyone working with women and children.

Serve Our City Week is now only a month away (July 10th -14th).  140 volunteers have already registered and 18 churches have committed to be involved. We anticipate being able to deliver around 30 projects across the city, each staffed by teams drawn from a range of different churches.

PROJECTS

 

If you have any suggestions for local neighbourhood clean up projects, or referrals of people who desperately need some help please contact Ian Clarkson asap. Please remember the purpose of the week is to demonstrate  Christians  from churches across the City working together with the Council, Community centres and Social Service Groups to transform our local communities by cleaning, clearing, painting, decorating, renovating, reaching, sharing - doing whatever it takes - to demonstrate the hope of Jesus.

 

LOANS OF EQUIPMENT

 

To deliver all this work lots of tools and equipment will be needed and we do not have the budget to buy new equipment. If your church or you personally have any of the following items which could be loaned to the project for the week please contact Ian Clarkson asap. They will need to be clearly lablelled in order that correct items are returned to the correct owners

• Gardening Tools  (Spades, forks, hoes, shears, barrows, hedge clippers, strimmers etc)
• Power Tools
• Ladders, steps
• Safety gear... (hi vis clothing, helmets, boots etc)
• Painting and decorating equipment (brushes, rollers, trays, scrapers etc.)
• Litter pickers, gloves, sharps disposal kits ettc.

FINANCE

 

Because we have had some disappointment with grant applications money is short and we would value donations from individuals, churches and businesses to support this work.  Donations from individuals may be gift aided. For details please contact Ian Clarkson asap.

NOTES ON PCAN NETWORK MEETING 12th June 2012

Present: Tim Keightley (Chair), Ken Wales, Peter Nunn, Andy Prosser, Shelley perry, Zoe Richardson, Gill Beeley, Margaret Smith, Sue Griffiths, Peter Lumsden, Ged Cunningham, Mark Wllett, Nicola Greene, Greg Smith.

Tim led us in a reflection based on a prayer of Oscar Romero.

1. Development of the new Together Lancashire initiative.. Ken reported on the fact that the company was in place, more directors were coming on board, Greg Smith and Gill Beeley were in post, various strategy documents and publicity materials were being worked on and networking and mapping of provision was taking place in Blackpool, Burnley and Blackburn. Some work was being done on the possibility of co-ordinating and sharing expertise on food bank projects across the county.

2. Serve our City week July 10th-14^th Greg reported on behalf of Ian Clarkson We've had 140 people register from 17 churches and we've to contact them all and confirm details and skills within the next week. People and churches can still sign up we set the deadline to give us a figure to base the projects on. If churches have projects or volunteers that they would like to submit then can they please let us know as soon as possible to help in the planning process. We were disappointed to be turned down for a CUF Mustard Seed grant but Greg was still hoping to spend time helping the group to evaluate the project and share stories and lessons from the week.

Catch up on other projects and activities

• Work clubs; Mark and Peter reported on activity in work clubs.. clear evidence of need and the usefulness of this ministry. We had benefited from a half day of sharing experiences and good practice across the church clubs and also with the Intact work club.

• Food Bank was very busy..and new initiatives planned in Leyland and Penwortham by St Leonards Church had good coverage in the press especially because of Muslim groups making donations. This raised the issue of how we could work together with other faith groups. It was suggested we invite Ali Amla to come to talk with us at a future meeting (Action Greg / Peter L)..

• Listening skills group; Sue reported on plans for an autumn session for church welcomers, stewards, sidespeople and pastoral teams to learn together on "becoming a listening church". Discussion affirmed this was really important across all sorts of social action projects and fresh expressions of church life. Watch for emails about date and plans for this event.

• Homelessness: The various drop ins and Homeless Forum activities were busy.. though numbers fluctuate.. We reflected on the way we had committed to make sure every day was covered and had succeeded in this.. What should be our next challenge / commitment. We talked about the need for slightly different style of drop in ministries with food.. maybe more with a family focus and more on the outskirts of the city. As Heritage Church are considering.

• East Preston.. Development of St Matthews Mission a bit on hold because of limited capacity to engage with funding processes. But consultation was going ahead with help from Fusion.. and there had been good fun day events in the park over half term reaching hundreds of people...Conversations going on with Methodist church and schools.. including possibility of a Good Childhood conversation process as developed by the Children's Society.

• Promoting CUF and poverty Sunday: Greg mentioned that 24^th June was designated by CUF as poverty Sunday but that it was a moveable feast. He was one of Cuf's team of speakers for such promotional events and services.. speaking to Leyland Deanery Synod tonight. Also next week was CUF's relaunch service at St Pauls with the Archbishop. Tim will be representing Preston and others from the county will be there.

• Eden network conference.. Greg and others had been to the Eden network conference in Manchester.. some really positive stories of incarnational urban mission teams and a recommendation for Matt Wilson's book "Concrete Faith"

Anything else

included Zoe flagging up that Waitrose and other supermarkets have a Charity of the month type scheme

Nicola spoke of a Youth Cafe outreach development in Ribbleton rathe like the ROC model with some interest from police and fire service.

Next Meeting..

We agreed a key agenda would be to consider what is the next strategic commitment for PCAN linked churches to make to the people of Preston.. Please think/pray about this and flag up your suggestions.

. We didn't fix a date but I'm suggesting late September early October and have set up a doodle poll with four alternative dates.. If you want to express a preference or flag up impossible dates go to

Guild update June

1. The next Churches PROCESSION steering group will take the form of a WORKSHOP, on Sunday 10th June, 2 - 4, at Holy Family, Ingol. Come and share your ideas and progress with preparation of displays, and pick up some further tips about creation of designs. See how the story is fitting together – there are bound to  be some further adjustments to ideas to achieve a unified picture, so please come with as much detail as you can about your element of the procession, including the practical side of materials, design etc, and also with an open mind to make things fit. It's a great opportunity to share ideas and learn from each other. I can't stress how important it is that the procession has a high visual impact, and presents a coherence in the way in which the elements link together to convey 'The living Christ'.

2. St. Anthony's Guild Parish Open Week, 10^th to 17^th June, 2012 

In accordance with the traditional Guild objective of having Churches open for a week, St. Anthony's Fulwood are holding an open week  from 10^th to 17^th June, Sunday to Sunday. The Church will be open between 2 and 4pm and between 6 and 8pm daily. The Church will be decorated for the occasion and there will be displays from the various Groups in the Parish. Do pop in and encourage others to.

On Sunday 17^th June  at 10.15am there will be a special Feast Day Mass for the Parish,  in the afternoon a fantastic  Field Day Event for all on St. Anthony's Fields from 1.00pm and at 7.00pm the St. Anthony's Singers are putting on a concert in Church – free entry.

 

 

3. Next on the schedule of 12 events is the Methodist Church Collection of Modern Christian Art, which is running from June 23 - July 18th, at St Peters Art centre, UCLan. A large number of schools are already booked to come along, and of course any church group would be more than welcome, perhaps taking the opportunity to explore the use of the visual as a focus for prayer or worship. 4. SERVE OUR CITY

10 – 14^th July; 5 days, 50 projects, 500 people, 5000 hours

There are currently 132 volunteers signed up from 17 churches across all denominations – so lots more are needed to bring this vision of serving the city to fruition. Ron Farrington (Longton Community church) has been unwell but is starting to make a recovery – and can we hold Ron in our prayers, along with Ian Clarkson at Fulwood Free Methodist who has taken on much oF the organisation. Ian's plea is that people sign up for the project very soon as the team will be working on designating domestic & community projects from mid June and the clearer idea they have of volunteers available the better. 5. ECUMENICAL SERVICE, Sunday 2^nd September, 3 pm  The planning is well advanced for what promises to be a unique event, introduced by ALED JONES and featuring SEVEN national church leaders – all speaking briefly on a common theme. The event will be ticketed, and the organising group will shortly announce how to acquire tickets – for the 3,500 capacity big tent on Avenham park. Although the event is free, significant costs are involved in staging it, so donations will be sought by way of a collection – envelopes will be placed on seats.

 

 

6. CHURCHES RIDE & STRIDE / Thanks-giving service at Brockholes, Saturday 8^th September 4 pm            The annual "Ride and Stride" sponsored cycle ride and walk is a chance for people to raise funds for church buildings, and provides the opportunity for churches across the fylde to open their doors to visitors. This year, we are planning to combine the event with an informal  act of worship on Saturday at Brockholes Nature Reserve 4 p.m., the aim of which is to mark the end of Preston Guild week and the launch of the Guild Cycle Wheel (http://www.prestonguild2012.com/resources/files/59_Guild%20Wheel%20Flyer%2010%2002%2011[1].pdf

( which takes in Brockholes in the course of its orbit around Preston) as part of the legacy of the 2012 Guild. The working title is "Celebrating Creation and Re-Creation".

This service might attract not only church-affiliated supporters, but also those just out to give the new Guild Wheel a whirl, and help them discover along the way that they are blessed to be able to enjoy God's Good Creation. Plenty of time to get back to town for the torchlight procession and fireworks!

                                Church and Community Fund Announces New Funding Themes  - deadline 30 June

Following a review of its funding activities, the Church of England's Church and Community Fund has announced that it is now accepting applications under its new strategic funding schemes. The overall aim of the fund is to grow the Church of England and develop its capacity to engage with the whole community. Through the new funding themes, community projects run by parish churches, deaneries, dioceses and other bodies connected to or working in partnership with the Church of England can apply for funding for projects that significantly expand the Church's engagement with neighbourhood renewal; seek innovative ways of developing established community projects so that they either grow existing or evolve into new communities of Christian Faith, and; replicate models of successful community engagement across the wider church. The level of grants available range from £10,000 to £20,000; except for the theme relating to the replication of projects where grants are in excess of £20,000.
