The East Preston Challenge rolls on

 

Following a fantastic start in St Matthew's last weekend, the East Preston Challenge hits Deepdale and Ribbleton over the next fortnight, offering people across all three areas the chance to win cash prizes for ideas that help make East Preston a place to be proud of.

 

Inspired by the stories that Speak Up Preston's team of community journalists have been uncovering, the East Preston Challenge is an exciting opportunity for people and organisations to come together to find and deliver local solutions to local issues.

 

If you've got an idea about how to make life better in Deepdale, Ribbleton or St Matthew's, then we'd like to hear about it and help you to make your idea happen. In return for your time and ideas, we've got some cash prizes and excellent practical support available to help the best ideas get off the ground and start making a difference locally.

 

Here's how it works:

·         Step 1: Come to one of our two remaining "Autumn of Action" events. Bring your ideas, or join up with others to think creatively.

·         Step 2: We'll support the best ideas from the events to develop further and submit more detailed proposals.

·         Step 3: Cash prizes and further support will be awarded to the best ideas: those with the potential to make positive change happen.

 

The remaining "Autumn of Action" events take place over the next two weeks:

Crucible Course... Following Jesus on the Margins

 

What does the course involve?

Crucible runs three intensive training weekends each year to equip Christians to follow Jesus

on the margins. Two streams are available on each weekend. Each stream flows separately,

but the subjects can be done in any combination:

Stream 1

After Christendom (5-6 November 2011) investigates the many opportunities, as well as the

challenges, that the end of imperial Christianity presents.

Urban Challenge (28-29 January 2012) examines the dynamics of mission and ministry in our

multicultural urban communities, where Christendom has faded first.

Creating New Churches (12-13 May 2012) offers resources for pioneering new churches –

and new kinds of churches – in emerging cultures, and renewing existing churches.

Stream 2

Restoring Hope (5-6 November 2011) explores how, in light of God's mission to bring shalom

(peace) to all creation, we can live towards that hope and create communities of peace.

Becoming Human (28-29 January 2012) probes the dynamics of discipleship and asks how we

can become more fully human as followers of the Son of Man.

Jesus Unplugged (12-13 May 2012) imagines how we might re-tell the story of Jesus today in

ways that connect with contemporary cultures.

Placements

Participants will also be offered opportunities for year-long or short-term placements in

various contexts – to work out in practice what they learn on these weekends.

Online learning

For those interested, some of the weekends are supported by online learning modules,

validated by The University of Wales, in partnership with Spurgeon's College, London.

Fr Peter Scally SJ is a Jesuit priest based at the Lauriston Jesuit Centre in Edinburgh. He worked previously at the Jesuit Communications Centre in Dublin, developing the prayer website Sacred Space. He is now director of Jesuit Media Initiatives which runs Pray-as-you-go and the online journal, Thinking Faith, and his talk will focus on these areas.

 

 

The Monday talks should finish by 9.30pm, the Saturday talk by 1.00pm.

All three talks will include an opportunity for some questions and discussion.

Two Upcoming National Events

 

Children, Churches and the Big Society: Calling Church and Nation is a one-day event organised by the Christian Childcare Forum, Livability, Salvation Army, Spurgeons, Oasis and others. This day will answer key questions about the Big Society and how it relates to children as well as send a message to government and others about what churches think.  The day will take place on 2 November at Regent Hall. London. Plenary speakers will include Bishop Paul Butler, Sarah Hayes, and Rev Steve Chalke.  Workshop sessions will cover internet safety, youth work, minorities in the community, parent/toddler groups, foster care, street pastors, setting up church projects and more. The Shalom community and the big society is a one-day event looking at how the church can be at the heart of the new call for community. Taking place at Westbourne Park Baptist Church on 12 November, the event is sponsored by Christian Coalition for Urban Mission, Spurgeon's College, Parish Nursing Ministries UK, Livability Community Mission and the London Urban Theology Project. Who are we?

Unlock is a Christian organisation that has been around since 1972. It exists to help urban churches of any denomination to respond to the challenges in their areas. We are especially concerned with communication in a 'traditional tabloid' ('non-book', 'oral learners', or 'text-shy') cultures.

Unlock, by various names, has been around since 1972, trying to help (mainly) urban Christians to understand and share their faith appropriately. Our life experience matters; our stories; our joys and sorrows. The Bible has plenty to say - more than we'll ever know - about our lives if we know how to read it and apply it... if we know how to UNLOCK it!

What do we do?

As well as deploying our team of workers, we publish a variety of group Bible study packs, games, Lent courses and audit materials and provide training. 'Unlock more than you think' and 'Unlock DIY' will give you more ideas about using Unlock's methods.

An example: Finding God's story within your own (Birmingham):-

Through short stories and video clips, and talking through issues such as bullying, weddings, and normal day to day life struggles,such as depression, I have been able to help the ladies engage with stories in the Bible that relate to them as people, and hopefully giving them a sense that they are valued and loved. The biggest learning curve for me through working with Unlock's approach is that takingthe Good News to people is not complicated and doesn't have to

be. It's about allowing yourself to be incarnate in each context you find yourself in and being relevant.     For me also it's about allowing and enabling each person to find God's story within their own narrative.

Hi All

Firstly, let me introduce myself. My name is Keith, I was a volunteer with Breathe/Seed for a time, but after I finished as a volunteer, I carried on supporting the monthly prayer meetings of which I have now been asked to take on as the co-ordinator.

The dates for the next 3 meetings are September 29th, October 27th and November 24th. Please note that the venue has changed. At the time of sending this email, they are going to held at the board room at the Uclan Building which is through the big room that is opposite the Breathe/Seed office. If this changes, I will let you know in good time. The prayer times aim to start for 7pm to finish no later than 9pm.

If possible, could you aim to arrive for about 6.50pm so we can start at 7pm. I do appreciate that we have busy days etc, so this may not always be possible. Could I ask that as prayer needs come up, please make a point of letting me know as I will need to collate them for our prayer times together.

Finally, I would like to strongly encourage everyone to attend if possible. We need to face the battle head on as a team together. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to email or phone me. My mobile is 07929 379110. I would ask that my number is NOT passed on to anyone else without checking with me first. That would be appreciated.
