CUF request

Subject: CUF request   : Please reply to Ed Saville not me...as I'm going on holiday..

Hi folks,

I have had a request from CUF (rather urgently) for some stories; for example individual stories of people living and suffering in deprived neighbourhoods, and stories from activists who are working hard to improve communities. The detail is important here – who is the activist, where are they working, what is the need in their community, how do they feel about what they are doing, how could they be better resourced. I would say that of the two of these, stories from activists, or potential activists, are the most important.

If you can provide any stories and/or would be willing to talk about it please email them to me – or email just to say phone – as soon as possible.

I hope to be able to provide the stories by the end of the week.

Greg – could you please circulate around PCAN?

Blessings

Ed

NOTES ON PCAN MEETING 27th June 2011

This is just a brief note to update the network on decisions taken at the PCAN meeting at Carey Baptist Church;

  1. On Governance Issues:

While we are still waiting for CUF, Blackburn Diocese and the Methodist District to establish the Joint Venture which will be the charitable body to support Christian urban social action across Lancashire, PCAN is not going to stand still. We will continue to network, offer mutual support and take new initiatives as we are able. There was a consensus that we do need a (light) constitution as an association and officer in place. We asked the small strategy group to get this sorted for us by the autumn, and represent PCAN's interest in the joint Venture group, and to report back to the whole network.

  1. On Belonging to Wider Networks;

We agreed PCAN should pay a small subscription to become a member of

  • Preston Council for Voluntary Service
  • Preston Homeless Forum
  • The Christian coalition for Urban Mission

  1. Unemployment Issues

We had a lengthy discussion about how churches could get involved with helping unemployed people which benefited from the presence of Huw Roberts of Job Centre Plus and Mark Willet from Kings Church who are working to set up a Work Club on the Kingsfold estate in Penwortham.   We agreed there was a need / opportunity for more of these initiatives across the Preston district and potential for various churches to host them.  We agreed to set up a sub group of PCAN to progress this and invite other interested parties to join us to explore how best to move forward.

So if you are interested in developing a Christian response to unemployment locally get in touch and we will invite you to join us for a meeting in the next couple of months.

4. We shared news of lots of other things happening over the summer.. and good progress in homeless drop ins, food bank development and much else.   Next big event for PCAN is the Listening Skills evening on Wed July 20th.

We wil set a date for the next full meeting (probably late September) and inform you in due course

Thoughts on Cameron's 'Big Society' or, as Tony Blair used to call it 'The Third Way'

Dont quite agee with Steve Chalke ( see my comments) but it's worth debating

Greg Smith commented
Nothing wrong with Christians being generous out of the resources God has given them to share.. Nothing wrong with charities being entrepreneurial about generating income.. that's just good stewardship.. But there is a lot wrong with a government/society that denies its/our responsibility for the welfare of all people (not just citizens), that makes cuts that hit the poorest and make staff in the public and voluntary/faith sector redundant or forces them to accept lower wages and poorer conditions all round while refusing to tax the richest in proportion to their means.

Living and proclaiming the truth

Part of our call to love and serve people is sharing with them the truth of sin and its consequences as well as God's love and acceptance. David Arscott contends that the most powerful way to do this is to model it – by living out our beliefs.

Voluntary action under threat: Briefings from NCIA

Voluntary action under threat: what privatisation means for charities and community groups

National Coalition for Independent Action (NCIA) is a network of individuals and organisations who believe there is a need to defend independent voluntary and community activity. Our new paper presents evidence about the dangers of commissioning, localism and 'big society,' all part of the government's privatisation agenda.

·        Public service cuts are a political choice, not an inevitability.
·        Creating competitive markets in the voluntary sector through commissioning damages services, users and staff and threatens independence.
·        'Localism' and 'big society' plans will increase government control, erode accountability and equality and make it more difficult for communities to thrive.

Stats About the Drop In at Central Methodist

Phil Moore writes

Last Monday the drop in completed its 52nd session, that is, its first six months.  It was most appropriate, therefore that the 1000th visitor threshold was crossed on the same evening. Our current aggregate foot fall is now 1022. Also in the first 6 months we have had 509 volunteer shifts worked which when multiplied 3 hours per session is a total  1527 hours. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication.

GRANTS FOR LOCAL VOLUNTARY AND COMMUNITY GROUPS

Preston Council for Voluntary Service is happy to announce the launch of two new grant programmes for voluntary and community groups in Preston.

The Guild Acorn Small Grants programme is designed to support groups participating in Guild 2012.  Phil Walsh, Head of Guild Community Programme, said "'Many voluntary and community sector organisations have begun planning for Preston Guild sometimes in collaboration with similar organisations, by registering for processions or developing their own participation project. The Guild Acorn grants provide useful pump priming grants to develop ideas and help take initial planning one step further. We hope that this will lead to 2012 being a vibrant year of participation as part of the People's Guild programme".

The Health Inequalities in Preston Scheme provides up to £1,500 for groups to tackle some of the priority health inequality issues that Preston faces such as cancer, smoking and healthy weight.  Gulab Singh, Assistant Director Healthy Community / Healthy City Coordinator, said "The PCT recognises the importance of helping local groups tackle important health issues which impact on their health and wellbeing.  The scheme aims to encourage local community groups / organisations to engage with health improvement activity and promote access to services."

Joan Burrows, Chief Officer of Preston CVS said "We always welcome opportunities to work in partnership with other agencies to help support voluntary groups provide bigger and better services to the people of Preston.  These grants are a very welcome addition to the many services we already provide."

The closing date for applications for both schemes is Monday 18 July.  Details of these and other grants available can be found on www.prestoncvs.org/grants or by contacting Preston CVS.
